What's sd-plasta-ship?
It's an amazing plastic-based compound created by a group of chemists.
It gets its name from its ability to let you see every aspect of the relationship,
or 'ship', of Sam Carter and Daniel Jackson.
How was it created?
The research group that created the material was funded by Dr. Samantha
Carter. According to Dr. Carter, she began developing the compound in
early 1994 after developing what she called a 'fondness' for the archeologist
who's work she had begun reading. Sometime later that year, she hastened
the research after, as she stated, she "realized the man's pure brilliance"
when he accomplished a feat that even she could not.
Even after reports of Daniel Jackson's death, she
continued working on the project. Though Dr. Carter said she felt embarrassed
by her attachment to a dead man she'd never met, she "simply couldn't
stop working on it." She told us, "The researchers must have
thought I was insane, but it didn't bother me. I can't explain it... I
just had to keep going." With a hardy laugh, she stated, "I
must have been insane... but the insanity paid off."
What was Dr. Carter going to use sd-plasta-ship
for?
She's never told us, but many theories abound. Some people believe that
she intended to give a pair of glasses made with the material to Dr. Jackson
in the hopes that it would lead to a relationship between them. Others
believe she intended to create a pair of glasses for herself so that she
might be able to experience their relationship even though they had never
met. Many others think that she simply wanted to bring a smile to the
faces of people who would enjoy seeing Sam and Daniel 'shippy moments.
Why have these glasses been so hard to
find until now?
Though she never explained why, Dr. Carter took the material off the market
some time in 1997. (Around this time, Dr. Jackson was discovered to be
alive and, unfortunately for Dr. Carter, married. Many theorize that she
may have removed the product out of respect for the man and his kidnapped
wife. )The material was very scarce after this, only sold on the black
market, mostly by people calling themselves 'Rebels'.
Finally, in June 2003, Dr. Carter stated that she
"felt it was time" to reintroduce the material, and within the
last few months, sales for glasses made with sd-plasta-ship have soared.
